DON DAVID DOMINATES EL PASO

The Tate Branch Southwest Superchargers made their second appearance of the year August 26 in El Paso. Club COO Don David took home the winners share over a close field of blown extremists.

Rd 1 Time Trials started @ 6:00 p.m. as the Ford-powered altered of Rickey Weeaks performed the ritual mandatory burn-out to clean the tires and lay down a stretch of fresh rubber on the El Paso Motorplex concrete. A sharp straight 4.76/138 displayed on the score board. Great start! Ricky Esparza's slingshot next lined up with Gary Hills r.e.d. Gary has been struggling with a new motor combo, 5.12/134 to Ricky's 4.93/141. Don David laid down a ladder-topping 4.62/149 vs. Joe Navar's 4.67/145. Jacob Penner went 4.68/150 alone. Christian Leffew went 4.67/145 opposite Janna Skinners sub-index 4.55/151.

TT2 saw Leffew slow slightly, 4.71/143. Penner made a consistent 4.70/149 to Esparza's 4.89/141. Skinner went 4.58/149 vs. David's 4.62/148. Navar's single was 4.58/148 (new #1). Hill went 4.90/141 on a single. And the altereds of Weeaks and Al Seelig ran 5.02/110 (crossed center line) and 6.22/26 major crossed up) respectively.

The SWSC Electronic Ouija Board/Calculator revealed the starting ladder to be #1 Qualifier Joe Navar (.0118 off index). His opponent in Rd 1 would be #8 Gary Hill (.3026). #2 Qualifier Janna Skinner (.0121) (three ten-thousandths slower!) would meet #7 Ricky Esparza (.2965). #3 on the ladder was Don David (.0213) and his opponent would be #6 Rickey Weeaks (.1644). In the middle was #4 Christian Leffew (.0717) and #5 Jacob Penner at .0810 off the 4.60 index. Al Seelig would be first alternate. Rick Peterson made a pass but didn't get a time.

Rd 1 SWSC Eliminations pulled up to the top of the hill to start gettin' down to business around 8.30 p.m. #4 Christian Leffew and #5 Jacob Penner fired, and right away it was evident Christian had a wounded mount as a little smoke was discharging from the puke tank. Jacob did his regular length burn-out, as Christian shortened up noticeably. At the green, Jacob launched, but Christian rolled forward slightly, then pulled the fuel shut-off to end the pain (blown head gasket). Win light to Penner, 4.67/150. Next up was #3 Don David and #6 Rickey Weeaks. A super close competition pass went off, Dons 4.71/145 just edging out Ricky's game 4.73/147. Typical SWSC side-by-side racing! #1 Joe Navar rolled up to meet #8 Gary Hill. Joes blown beast struck the tires at the hit, a pedaling 4.99/146 losing to Gary's 4.75/143. Finally #2 Janna Skinner met #7 Ricky Esparza. Janna took the win with a 4.84/115 to Ricky's loose 5.38/99.

SWSC Semi-Finals saw #3 Don David run #2 Janna Skinner. Janna's Chevy powered dragster spun slightly at the green, just enough to see Don go 4.67/147 to her 4.76/121. #5 Jacob Penner met #8 Gary Hill in the other half to see who would meet Don in the final. Gary took the stripe on a hole-shot, his slower 4.74/146 over Jacobs faster 4.69/150.

The SWSC final rolled through the bleach box around 11:00. #3 Don David, leading the points so far in 2017, met #8 Gary Hill. Gary had been a little off pace all night. Don was having his way with all competitors he met. Again Don ran a nice 4.67 to Gary's slightly slower 4.72. Don David expanded his points lead. Congratulations, Don!

The Good Vibrations Quick Light Bonus Award went to Don in light of his .008 r.t. in the semis. Janna Skinner collected both the ATI Jet Quick Qualifier Bonus and the TR Chassis Progressive Qualifier Bonus. Mears Mazda Winner Bonus to Don David, and Mears Mazda R/U Bonus to Gary Hill.
